48th ASEAN Summit Opens in Philippines: Energy Security, Food Security and Citizen Safety Top Priorities

The 48th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) opened on Friday in Cebu province, the Philippines, with energy security, food security and the safety of ASEAN citizens worldwide as its main priorities. ASEAN ministers will also discuss preparations for commemorative events marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, scheduled for July 2026.
ASEAN, established in 1967, comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste, which joined the bloc at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia in October of last year.
