Turkmenistan is building a new highway to the Kazakhstan border: what is known about the project

Construction of the new modern Turkmenbashi–Garabogaz–Kazakhstan border highway is continuing at a rapid pace. The project includes two sections: the 207-kilometer Turkmenbashi–Garabogaz route and the 43.6-kilometer Garabogaz–Kazakhstan border section.

The construction work, commissioned by the Ministry of Roads of Turkmenistan, is being carried out by the Altyn Nesil business company. According to Caspian Vestnik, the company’s specialists are currently removing vegetation layers and conducting earthworks simultaneously at 13 sections of the Turkmenbashi–Garabogaz route.

The new road will have four lanes. The total width of the highway will be 27.5 meters, with each carriageway measuring 7.5 meters wide and each traffic lane 3.75 meters wide. To improve safety, opposing traffic flows will be separated by a concrete barrier, while protective guardrails will be installed along the edges of the road.

The road surface will consist of multiple layers. After leveling and compacting the soil, geotextile material, several layers of gravel-sand mixture, and three layers of hot asphalt concrete of varying density and thickness will be laid.

The new highway will have a capacity of up to 580 vehicles per hour, or around 14,000 vehicles per day. Eight bus stops, parking areas, gas stations, and social infrastructure facilities are planned along the route.

Entrances and exits to the highway will be equipped with a video surveillance system connected to a data storage server.

A total of 778 pieces of equipment and more than one thousand specialists are involved in the Turkmenbashi–Garabogaz section. On the Garabogaz–Kazakhstan border section, 216 units of equipment and 321 qualified specialists are working.

In addition, construction is underway on two water treatment facilities, a parking area, and police road control checkpoints along the Turkmenbashi–Garabogaz section.

The Turkmenbashi–Garabogaz–Kazakhstan border highway will become part of the Central Asian transport network linking Iran, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. The route is also included in the international North–South Transport Corridor, which could attract cargo carriers from Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and India.

The development of transport infrastructure is expected to create additional opportunities for international freight transportation and cross-border trade with countries in the region.
