Autopilot for orbit: AI will enable satellites to refuel and repair spacecraft autonomously

Silicon Valley startup EraDrive and aerospace giant Northrop Grumman have signed an agreement to develop satellites equipped with highly autonomous artificial intelligence. This technological solution aims to transform complex orbital operations into a fast, precise, and safe process.
Currently, Northrop Grumman uses Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV) spacecraft to refuel and extend the service life of other satellites in geostationary orbit. However, such missions require extreme precision and take a significant amount of time. With the integration of EraDrive’s AI, the most complex stages will become fully automated: neural networks will independently calculate docking trajectories, real-time systems will analyze the surrounding environment, and robotic manipulators will be able to perform precise repair operations without constant control from Earth-based operators.
Over the next year, the companies will focus on developing orientation and navigation systems, as well as satellite self-diagnostics capabilities. In addition to software, EraDrive will create a set of compact sensors that will serve as the “eyes” for neural networks. At the same time, Northrop Grumman’s subsidiary SpaceLogistics is preparing to launch a new type of orbiter with universal manipulators for multi-stage tasks by the end of 2026.
