Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov: Military Action in the Caspian Region Is Absolutely Unacceptable
13.04.2026 | 14:03 |During his visit to the Republic of Austria, National Leader of the Turkmen People, Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty (People's Council), Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, gave an interview to representatives of the national media. The head of the highest organ of people's power voiced Turkmenistan's principled and clear position on the most pressing global issues—the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and ensuring security in the Caspian Basin.
Responding to a question about the risks of using weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the neighboring region, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan supports their complete and unconditional ban. The National Leader noted that for a country that is an active participant in the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia, this status is not only a matter of politics, but above all a matter of morality and responsibility to future generations.
The Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty (People's Council) emphasized the catastrophic consequences of WMD use for the environment and socioeconomic development of entire regions. He called on the international community to exercise the highest level of responsibility, excluding any superficial approach to such a dangerous threat.
The interview focused on the situation affecting the Caspian region. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov recalled that over the course of three decades, Turkmenistan, together with Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran, and Russia, had been building a unique architecture of Caspian partnership, culminating in the 2018 Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea.
The National Leader of the Turkmen people has clearly stated that military strikes on the territory of a neighboring Caspian state are deeply concerning, and Turkmenistan categorically rejects such actions.
"Military actions in the Caspian region are absolutely unacceptable," the Head of the Khalk Maslakhaty emphasized.
Turkmenistan expressed its readiness to support the draft Joint Statement of the Caspian states, aimed at preventing escalation and preventing the expansion of the Middle East conflict into the Caspian Sea. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov confirmed that this document fully reflects Ashgabat's fundamental views on regional stability.
Turkmenistan's position remains unchanged: any disputes must be resolved exclusively through peaceful, political, and diplomatic means. Ashgabat has once again confirmed its role as a responsible international partner, capable of soberly assessing risks and acting as a guarantor of peace in a strategically important region.
