The UAE creates the country’s first national shipbuilding consortium

In Abu Dhabi, leading global logistics operator AD Ports Group announced the creation of the UAE Shipbuilding Consortium — the first unified platform in the country’s history for shipbuilding, ship repair, and marine engineering. The new alliance is intended to strengthen the nation’s position in the global maritime sector.

At the initial stage, the consortium includes major national industry players such as Ports Group, SAFEEN Drydocks, Dubai Shipbuilding & Engineering, along with several metallurgical and engineering enterprises. The Noatum Maritime international company will coordinate the project.

The alliance will help coordinate procurement more efficiently, optimize workflows, and improve the overall competitiveness of the sector. In addition, the initiative will open access to major international contracts for local small and medium-sized businesses.

“The creation of the UAE’s first shipbuilding consortium reflects our commitment to developing the country’s industrial potential as part of the economic diversification strategy. By uniting the sector, we are positioning the UAE as a leading player in global maritime manufacturing,” said Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, CEO of AD Ports Group.

The consortium is already planning active expansion into international markets. In particular, consortium member SAFEEN Drydocks recently acquired the Spanish shipbuilding company Balenciaga, enabling partners to implement complex international shipbuilding projects worldwide.
